ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a photographer/digital artist because there is an innate sense of beauty within that I want to share with the world. Through my photographs and collages of beautiful scenes, textures, and colors, I seek to connect myself and the viewer with my sense of beauty and the Divine.

When I “laid my hand to the plow” ten years ago, I was more of a photographer than artist. But with the evolution of the digital world and the honing of my design skills, I have become an artist. This shift has changed how and what I photograph. Through the lens I seek to gather the raw material for future collages or creative expression. I still love to photograph rural and coastal scenes that were the mainstay of my early work, but I find myself devoting more and more time to the unfettered creativity that my software tools afford me. The blending of colors, textures, and images is fascinating to me. My art”play” is meditative. My best work springs from that still, small voice within...

A Nikon D200 and Photoshop CS2 are my primary tools. Each offers a unique experience in creativity. I don’t think I would be drawn to one if I didn’t have the other. It’s a healthy co-dependent relationship. The camera allows me to see and experience beauty first hand...in the field with wind blowing against my face and the lilt of wildlife sounds. When I am in the field, I am gathering what is “in season”…the raw material for my work. “Shoot what presents itself” is my field mantra. In my digital darkroom, with a limitless array of tools the more creative part of my process is had. I massage my harvest into images of mystery and divinity.

My style of work vacillates back and forth between surreal/modern and Old World Mystical/Spiritual. Trademarks of my work include: symmetry, the use of three elements, and Divine symbols. My palate consists of rich deep colors… golds, browns, dark greens and reds…. Old world color heightened for added richness. Can you say “Italy”?
